LPG is much, much better for the environment than petrol or diesel, as well as being better for your wallet. It’s hard to think of a mechanical means of getting about that have the advantages that LPG does.
Global warming is a concern in many people’s minds these days, and poor air quality is a problem that can get up your nose – literally – when you walk out your door, with some urban centres having poorer air quality than others. Carbon dioxide, nitric oxide and particulates are the key offenders in contributing to both these problems, so moves are being made to remove these types of emissions. LPG emits 20% less carbon dioxide than its petrol equivalent and much less nitric oxide. One study found that 20 LPG cars produce the same amount of nitric oxide (NOx) as one diesel car (presumably of the same type). And diesel engines give out 120 times as many particulates as LPG cars. Literally, LPG can be a breath of fresh air.
And the environmental advantages of LPG don’t stop just with lower emissions. LPG engines tend to run more quietly, thus reducing noise pollution. LPG also carries a lower risk of contaminating soil or water, as it evaporates very rapidly in the event of a spill, unlike petrol and diesel, which have a much higher level of ecotoxicity. LPG is a natural by-product of the gas extraction process (this is the source of 60% of the UK’s LPG), reducing the cost and environmental damage done during extraction.
